Coleg Morgannwg is a joint sponsor within the Building the Future Together project which aims to provide a comprehensive suite of options and interventions to develop the skills needed for learning and future employment, raise aspirations, and support the emotional and social needs of 11 – 19 yr olds in RCT.

The three year scheme offers intensive one to one support for those falling behind in numeracy and literacy as well as vocational training options for youngsters who find it difficult to learn through traditional academic learning. It will also provide a range of innovative activities such as motivational and emotional intelligence support to boost their confidence in learning.

Deputy Minister for Skills, John Griffiths, said “Building the Future Together will reach out to thousands of youngsters in Rhondda Cynon Taf, enabling them to feel confident about their learning choices. It is vital that we support young people to gain the right skills to enable them to succeed in a competitive jobs market and enter long-term employment leading to a more prosperous and healthy future”.

Coleg Morgannwg will aim to support over 500 participants in key interventions that include:-

  1. Additional-alternative curriculum
  2. Support for Basic Skills
  3. Summer Schools
  4. Financial and other resources to support motivation, confidence -building and work related activities to raise aspiration and achievements.

Progress on this project will be posted on this site on a regular basis.

Success Stories

Hannah Angle

“The Let’s Go Programme gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion for performing”

Hannah AngleHannah left school in May 2010 with 3 GCSE’s grade C; then joined a level 1 Retail training programme at Matalan.

She then became  disengaged from education, and was contacted by Careers Wales and referred to Coleg Morgannwg to enrol on their  Let’s Go Programme, funded by the Building the Future Together project.
She decided if she was to improve her career prospects, she’d need to achieve her GCSE in Maths, but her real interest was in Performing Arts.

She attended the college for an initial assessment, was advised on the qualifications achievable and decided to pursue this route.

Hannah said “If I’m to pursue my dream of becoming an actress, then being part of this programme is the best possible start to achieving that ambition.”

Following a week of induction and some team-building activities, Hannah was introduced to the Performing Arts tutor who, was not only immediately impressed with Hannah’s enthusiasm, but also recognised her potential. Part of the BTFT Let’s Go programme involved a taster in the area that interested the learner and through this Hannah was invited to take part in the production of “WAR”, along with the Performing Art students.

Hannah thoroughly enjoyed the experience and in September 2011, she enrolled on the Level 3 Diploma in Performing Arts course. She is continuing with her studies and enjoying her course, particularly performing in the college productions. She is hoping to take her GCSE Maths again next year with the view to achieving a higher grade.

Hannah said, “I’d certainly recommend the provision at the college; the Let’s Go programme gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion for performing and hopefully get better grades in my GCSE’s.  In the future I would like to take up a career in acting”.

Hannah’s tutor Amanda De-la-Hay says ”Hannah is always highly motivated and acted on the advice and guidance she was given in a positive way. She takes an active part in all our productions and I am confident that she will achieve her ambition for future success”.

Debbie Lemonheigh

Debbie LemonheighDebbie left school with no GCSE’s and became disengaged from education.

She was referred to Coleg Morgannwg by her Careers Adviser, and plucked up the courage to enrol on the “Let’s Go Programme” funded by the Building the Future Together Project aimed at helping young people re-engage with learning and giving them better prospects for employment.

As part of the timetable Debbie was offered additional learner support via Learndirect, which she found extremely helpful, especially in Literacy. Let’s Go included motivational /confidence building stages and employability skills.

Debbie had set her sights on a career in Childcare and in September 2011 enrolled on to the Cache Level 1 award in Caring for Children course. She said “Before I enrolled on the course I lacked confidence in my ability to learn, especially in Literacy. The Lets Go scheme has helped me become a more confident person and I’ve re-discovered books and reading! I’m really excited for the future. My family have also seen a positive change in me”.

Debbie’s tutor, said “Initially Debbie was nervous about the sessions, especially Literacy; but after initial extra support and using Learndirect as a learning tool, she gained in confidence. She’s been really focussed and is a great example of how you can pick yourself up, and with a bit of courage to have a go, can begin to achieve your ambitions, I’m glad that I’m having the opportunity to support her on her learning journey”.
