Careers Teachers Briefing

On Wednesday November 2nd 2011 Head teachers and Careers teachers from the 19 Comprehensive schools within Rhondda Cynon Taf were invited to a tour of the new Taf Ely Learning Campus.

Coleg Morgannwg top out with Construction Excellence

31st March 2010

Coleg Morgannwg’s new £40 million campus is being showcased as a model demonstration project for exceptional corporate social responsibility and sustainability by Constructing Excellence Wales.

The Taf Ely Learning Campus at Nantgarw, which is backed with over £34m Welsh Assembly Government funding, including investment from the European Regional Development Fund, has just celebrated the halfway point in its construction and topping out ceremony.

The campus is being developed to strict reduce, reuse and recycle guidelines and has resulted in it being used as an exemplar project for other construction companies.

The structure of the building was pre-fabricated off-site before being transported in sections to Nantgarw for construction company, Laing O’Rourke, to assemble. This has resulted in a quicker erection process and waste reduction of 85% which would normally go to landfill.

Coleg Morgannwg celebrated the completion of the structure with a topping out ceremony attended by Leighton Andrews AM Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning.

Leighton Andrews said: “We want our young people to be learning in facilities which are environmentally responsible, modern and technologically advanced. Coleg Morgannwg’s new campus is a great example of this ambition in practice.”

The new four-storey building will replace the college’s existing site at Rhydyfelin and provide state-of-the-art facilities for more than 3000 students and staff.

Principal at Coleg Morgannwg, Judith Evans, said: “The new campus has been developed to the highest sustainable standard working towards the BREEAM rating of excellent. So to be recognised by Construction Excellence Wales as an outstanding project in sustainability is a huge achievement.

“The topping out ceremony was a great opportunity to celebrate the months of planning, development and construction and it was really satisfying to finally see it all coming together.”

Laing O’Rourke will now begin work on the internal structure of the new campus which is due to be completed in September 2012.

OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENT

Coleg Morgannwg student Nicholas Clements is the first student to benefit from a work placement at the new Taf Ely Learning Campus project at Nantgarw.  Twenty- six year-old Nicholas from Cardiff is currently enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction at the Nantgarw campus.

Nicholas has been given the opportunity to work with staff from Laing O Rourke; the main contractors building the college’s state-of-the-art campus.  He will work alongside the contractors for four days and spend one day studying at the college. Nicholas has joined the project at an exciting time in the development as the ‘piling’ for the main structure is well underway in preparation for the erection of the main framework. “Working with Laing O’Rourke has given me a real insight into the day to day running and management of a construction project.

Last year whilst studying on the BTEC National Certificate in Construction I was fortunate enough to attend a meeting of Coleg Morgannwg’s Student Parliament and representatives from the architect Boyes Rees - where ideas for the new Taf Ely Campus were discussed. It’s been interesting to see those ideas develop into plans which in a few months time will start to become reality.

Working with the engineers has helped me understand the theory I have been taught and I am looking forward to taking this back into the classroom. I think the new Taf Ely Learning Campus is going to be a fantastic facility, not only for the students who will be able to study in a modern contemporary building which will be advanced in environmental technology, but also for the local community and business, who will be able to take advantage of the training restaurant, hair & beauty salons, crèche, gym and public library”.

Mel Jones, Curriculum Area Manager for Technology said, “This is an exciting development for the college and it is great to see the new campus taking shape and providing hands on experience for our technology students.  Plans are already in place for more students to tour the new build site and gain work placements at various development times throughout the coming year; students and staff from various curriculum areas will also have the opportunity to engage with the project.

Stephen Robbins, Laing O Rourke’s Corporate Social Relations and Logistics Manager added “This is a fantastic opportunity for Nicholas to get involved in the construction process within a live environment. Laings are committed to working with the college, offering students like Nicholas the opportunity to get hands on site experience of the construction industry.  Nicholas has shown great potential and we wish him well for the future, I’m sure he has a great career ahead of him”

WORK TO START ON NEW 21ST CENTURY COLLEGE CAMPUS

Work StartsEducation Minister Leighton Andrews helped mark the start of construction work on a new state-of-the-art campus at Coleg Morgannwg, Nantgarw.

The Taf Ely Learning Campus – which is backed by more than £34 million of Welsh Assembly Government funding including almost £7m from the European Regional Development Fund – will replace the college’s existing Rhydyfelin site.

As well as expanding the College and modernising its facilities, the four-storey project will also house a new County Borough Library.

Leighton Andrews said:  “This project is about more than simply providing a new building to replace the Rhydyfelin site. “It’s about ensuring that the College is ‘fit for purpose’ and that it provides a 21st Century learning environment which is free of barriers and is able to engage and inspire learners and the wider community.”

Judith Evans, Principal at Coleg Morgannwg, said:  “Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter for Coleg Morgannwg and for the wider community.
