College Life
Student Support

Coleg Morgannwg encourages students to participate in activities outside of their main course of study.

Apart from the sheer enjoyment of joining in an activity with a group of friends you will learn new skills and enhance your CV.

The extra curricular activities range from Sport to Drama and Media through to fundraising for charity.

Sport at Coleg Morgannwg

is organised through the 5x60 programme which is in place to provide opportunities for young people to become more active and aims to encourage people who do not currently play sport to get more active and have fun.

It also aims to provide opportunities for volunteers who want to gain more experience in working in a sports environment to help run clubs and to pick up awards and qualifications.

As well as setting up extra-curricular clubs the 5x60 programme tries to make sure all activities are sustainable by developing links with local clubs.

An important part of the programme is to listen to the needs of students and provide activities that they want to participate in. Activities in 2010 ranged from traditional team sports such as rugby, football, netball or hockey to outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking, hill walking or rock climbing to indoor classes such as Zumba, street dance or martial arts.

We aim to make joining in as easy and as flexible as possible, activities run as ‘turn up and play’, structured coaching sessions, competitive fixtures, or fun festivals.

Rhys is our designated 5x60 Officer, he is available across all campuses to listen to ideas and suggestions to help set up activities that the students want to see happen in college.

Sporting Chance

RugbyThis season (2010/11) Coleg Morgannwg has joined the colleges’ rugby league, with students now getting the chance to travel throughout the country playing different college teams.

And it gets even better …. our budding valleys rugby stars are being coached by Clive Jones the former Director of Rugby at Pontypridd, who is now the new Course Director for the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence.

An added extra comes from Coleg Morgannwg hosting the Cardiff Blues Academy which means our students are given the chance to turn their sporting dreams into reality; they get to train and play alongside the young professional rugby players of Cardiff Blues.

Putting on a Production

students from the colleges many creative, dance, drama and media courses often join forces to ‘put on a production ‘. They all feel incredibly lucky as the Rhondda Campus has excellent facilities and resources such as a professional dance studio; rehearsal room and an outstanding theatre performance space. Their energy and list of activities is awe inspiring

The Coleg Morgannwg Theatre Company at the end of another block buster year, have staged fantastic productions ranging from To Kill a Mocking Bird to Hair the musical. As they now sadly say goodbye and good luck to the departing students they look forward to working with new students, on an exciting list of events they have lined up for 2011 - 2012 . We invite you to join us and join them
